The two of you have gone quiet and nothing is actually wrong

Something that is not one more thing to deal with: a note she can read at 4pm on the worst day, a song for the walk to the bus, forty seconds of your voice with the advice taken out. One link, no account, nothing to install.

It is not a fight, which is almost the confusing part. She is six weeks into the worst stretch her job has ever thrown at her, and the two of you have quietly been reduced to logistics — did you eat, what time are you back, there is rice in the fridge. She gets in at nine, eats standing up at the counter, and falls asleep with the laptop still open on the bed. You send a heart. You know precisely how little that does.

Everything else arriving on her phone is a request. Work, her mother, the group chat about somebody else's wedding, four apps that want her attention for their own reasons. Even the kind messages have a small ask buried in them: reply, decide, be briefly cheerful. Whatever you send her has to be the one thing in the day that wants nothing from her at all.

And the thing you actually want to say — that you can see how hard this is, that nobody is keeping score, that you are not going anywhere and she does not have to be fun right now — flattens out completely in a text. Sent at 11pm it reads as the opening of a conversation she has no energy for. Sitting in a box it is simply there, and she can come back to it at 4pm on Thursday when it is at its worst, which is the hour it is actually good for.
