There are handovers that no shop stocks anything for. The four of you are giving the flat back at the end of the month. She is finishing the course and flying home to a country twelve hours away. He is leaving the team after nine years and somebody has suggested a farewell card, which everyone will sign with their name and an exclamation mark. What you want to hand over is the stretch of time itself, and the card shop has nothing whatsoever for that.
The material exists, technically. Three thousand photographs spread across four phones, the voice note from the night of the storm, the song that was on before every single night out, a group chat nobody will ever scroll to the start of. All of it is saved and none of it has been given, and saved and given are not the same thing. Saved is a folder. Given is somebody having gone through it on your behalf.
Which is why the editing is the actual gift. Twelve things, not three thousand, and under each one the single line that says why that one. This is the flat before we had chairs. This is the key that never worked. Anyone can forward an album. Choosing eleven photographs out of four years and writing what each one is — that is the part that proves you remembered.

Nineteen seconds. Tam is standing on the counter, which was banned in year two, everyone is doing the harmonies wrong including the two people who can genuinely sing, and at the eleven-second mark you can hear downstairs start up on the ceiling with the broom. That broom deserves a credit in this box, honestly.

Tam's is thirty seconds and mostly the story about the fire alarm. Rob's is nine seconds because he panicked. Esi's is the long one, recorded out on the balcony, and you will want to be somewhere private for the end of it. Mine is last, and I am not going to summarise mine here.

The spare, from the estate agent, which opened that door precisely never, and which lived on the hook by the kettle for four years anyway in case it changed its mind. Nobody was ever willing to throw it out. It came off the hook on Tuesday when we cleared the wall, and it seemed like it ought to go with you.

Eight to twelve, with a line under each. The limit is not technical — a hundred photographs is an album, and an album is something people scroll past. The editing is what turns it into a gift. There are practical ceilings too: photos want to be under 5MB and videos are meant to run 30–60 seconds, which is a useful pressure to be under.
Not in the sense of everyone editing the same box — there are no accounts here, so there is no shared login and no co-editing. In practice one person collects: you ask the group chat for a photo and thirty seconds of voice each, and then you pack it. The voices can be from everybody even though the packing is done by one person.
No, and please do not treat it as one. It is the version you hand over, not your backup. Keep your own originals exactly where they are and build the box as though the real copies still live on your phone, because they should. What you are making here is a thing that gets given and opened, not an archive.
Timespan, mostly. A care package is about right now — somebody is having a bad month and you want to put something in their hands this week. A memory box looks back across a stretch of shared time and hands it over at the end of it: a move, a graduation, a last day. Same six kinds of thing inside; completely different job.
No, and neither do you — there are no accounts anywhere in this. They tap the link and the box opens in whatever browser is on their phone. That matters more for a memory box than for most things, because it tends to get shown to other people, and nobody wants somebody's mum hitting a sign-up screen.
The link is the key: not listed, not guessable, and box pages are blocked from search engines, so it will never turn up in a search. Worth deciding before you seal a memory box in particular — anyone given the link can open it and pass it on, so if there is anything in there the four of you would not want forwarded into a wider group chat, take it out first.
