Pack the small things you'd have taped into a shoebox — a note, a photo, a song, forty seconds of your voice — seal the box, and send the whole thing as one link.
The urge usually arrives at a bad hour. Someone texts at 1am from a time zone six hours off, or you hear the news three days late, and what you want is to put something in their hands: the snack they like, the photo from that trip, the song that was playing in the car. Then you look up postage and it's forty dollars and nine days, and by the time a box would land the moment has moved on without you.
A digital care package is what you send instead. Not a gift card and not a wall of emoji — an actual box you pack one thing at a time. You type out the note. You dig the photo out of your camera roll. You paste the song. You hit record and talk for half a minute. Then you seal it, and when they open the link the things come out one at a time instead of all at once, which is the part that makes it feel like a parcel rather than a message.
Nobody signs up for anything. You pack it in the browser you already have open, you get a link back, and you paste that link wherever the two of you already talk — a message, an email, a group chat, the inside of a physical birthday card. Whoever holds the link can open the box. Nobody else can find it.

Half the pasta is in the pan and half of it is on the floor, and Dad is holding the colander like it has personally wronged him. You're laughing so hard your eyes are shut. I kept this one because it was the last night the four of us were in one room and none of us knew that yet.

This is the one from the car with the broken aux cable, where somebody had to hold the wire at exactly the right angle the whole way to the coast or the second chorus would cut out. I still catch myself checking my hand when it comes on. Put it on when the flat gets too quiet.

It's me trying to say something reassuring while Biscuit loses his mind at the postman, so the reassuring part gets interrupted twice. The gist, in case it's hard to hear: we're proud of you, your room is exactly as you left it, and you don't have to come home having proved anything.

The message you keep retyping at midnight and deleting because it reads as too earnest in a chat window. Inside a box it doesn't read as too earnest. It reads as a letter.
Not the flattering one. The one from the kitchen at 11pm where somebody has their eyes shut — the one that proves you were both actually there.
Pan around the room they'd recognise, or just film the walk home. Distance stops being abstract the moment they can see what the weather is doing over here.
Drop in the Spotify or YouTube link and write why it's that one. Half the point of a song is the sentence you attach to it.
Hit record and talk for forty seconds. A voice carries what text flattens out — the laugh halfway through, the pause right before the part that matters.
A ticket stub, a hotel key card, the keyring from the trip nobody else would understand. Take a picture of it, explain it, and it travels without going anywhere.

It's a box you pack in a browser instead of at the post office. You put in a written note, photos, a song link, a voice recording, a short video, a picture of some small object — then you seal it and get one link back. Whoever you send that link to opens the box and takes the things out one at a time, the way they would with a real parcel.
Packing is free. You can fill a whole box, preview it and change your mind without paying anything. There's one payment, of a few dollars (currently $2–5), and it happens at the moment you seal the box and get the link. No subscription and no plan to upgrade to — if you send another box next month you pay for that box, not for a membership.
Six kinds of thing: a typed note, photos, a short video, a song (usually a Spotify or YouTube link), a voice recording you make right in the page, and a photo of a small object. Photos need to be under 5MB, voice memos run up to two minutes and videos are meant to be 30–60 seconds. The limits are there because a box that takes a minute to load stops feeling like a gift.
You get a link, and where it goes next is up to you: paste it into a message, an email, a group chat, or write it inside a physical card. There's no send button asking for their email address, because the box doesn't know who they are. The person you hand the link to is the person who opens it.
Nothing physical moves. Nobody boxes up snacks and nobody needs your friend's street address — which is the whole point when they're in another country, or when you don't actually know where they live any more. What arrives is a link, and it arrives in seconds instead of a fortnight. What you give up is the thing they can hold; what you get back is the stuff a parcel can't carry, like your voice reading something out, or the song that was playing. If you want to send socks and instant noodles, send socks and instant noodles — this is for the other half.
The link is the key. It isn't listed anywhere, it isn't guessable, and box pages are blocked from search engines in robots.txt, so a sealed box never turns up in search results. The flip side is that anyone holding the link can open it — so send it the way you'd send anything personal, through a channel only they can read.
