Your friend moved eight time zones away and the calls got shorter

Something for their Tuesday morning, packed on your Monday night: forty seconds of the walk to the station, the shop that finally closed, their mug still in your cupboard. One link, opened whenever they get to it.

The arithmetic goes first. Nine hours means your evening is their next morning, so the only window either of you can reach without setting an alarm is forty minutes on a Sunday, and that window loses to work, to a flight, to somebody's wedding, three weeks running. What is left is reacting to each other's stories with a fire emoji. That is not nothing. It is also not the friendship.

Then there is the part nobody warns you about, which is that the room is quieter after the call than it was before it. You talk for an hour and you both do headlines — the job, the flat, the visa, the weather — because an hour has to cover four months and headlines are what fit into an hour. You hang up having swapped summaries. None of the small things get in, and the small things were the entire friendship: the shop, the walk, the man with the accordion, the joke that ran for six years.

A box does not require the two of you to be awake at the same time. You pack it at midnight on a Monday, badly, in your dressing gown. It sits there doing nothing until they open it on a tram nine hours later. And it holds exactly the material a phone call flattens — thirty seconds of the walk to the station, a photo of the shutter down on the shop you both loved, a song chosen for whatever hour it currently is over there.
