He could not be there for rakhi, so he built her a box — and a website

A rakhi gift sent online, from a brother who stretches every word he types: a letter, her song, a video, and a little website he built for her by hand.

A young man smiles beside an open rakhi box holding a card reading 'Happpiest Raksha Bandhan, Pihu! — your Aarav', while the little website he built glows on the laptop behind it.
Aarav, the night before it went out. Box packed, website live.

You can tell how he feels about her before you read a full sentence, because no word in his letter is allowed to end on time. Happiest becomes happpiest, sister gains three extra letters, and by the closing line the vowels are running long the way they do when someone is typing the way they would talk if she were in the room. She is not in the room. That is the whole reason the box exists.

Rakhi has a fixed date, but this brother counts from a different one. The 28th of December, his letter says, is the best day of his life — the day she came into it — and everything since has been measured from there. The rakhi box arrives on the festival’s schedule, but its real calendar is theirs.

What he packed is a full box: a photograph of her, a video, the song he calls one of the first favourite songs he ever learned from her, and the letter. The letter makes the standard rakhi promise — to stay by her side, to protect her, to be the bhaiya she deserves — and then makes the less standard one, the one worth quoting: that she is always exactly one shouted "bhaiyaaa" away from him, so she should never hesitate, even when he makes it hard.

And then there is the trinket, which is the part that separates this box from every gift on a shelf. He did not buy her anything. He built her a website — made it himself, by hand, a little site that exists for an audience of one. A bought gift is chosen. This one cost hours, and she can see every one of them in it. It is also why this rakhi gift could only go out online, as a link: no service that couriers rakhi hampers ships a website, and no parcel was going to reach her by the day anyway.

The letter signs off the way a certain kind of brother signs off: I love you 3000. It is a borrowed line, and it does not matter, because everything around it is his.
